Value Streams

Value streams represent the series of processes or steps that create value for a customer.

Purpose

A value stream is the set of actions needed to discover or deliver on a job-to-be-done / value proposition from a signal to an experience. A value stream always begins and ends with a user or customer. The goal is to improve the experience by optimizing the whole value stream.

Each value stream is made up of both value-added and non-value-added activities, and the goal of value stream mapping is to minimize or eliminate non-value-added activities, improving overall process efficiency and customer value.

Notes

In the unFIX model, we make no distinction between “Development Value Streams” and “Operational Value Streams” (as in SAFe). A “Development Value Stream” (in SAFe) is usually either a Product or a Service. An “Operational Value Stream” (in SAFe) is simply an inward-looking value stream (most often a Service Value Stream).
