Loosely Aligned Base

Base Type

A Loosely Aligned Base offers different products or services with few dependencies between each other.

Base Types: Fully Integrated Base β€’ Strongly Aligned Base β€’ Loosely Aligned Base β€’ Fully Segregated Base

Purpose

There are Bases that consist of several products that are offered to the same customers independently but still have some level of integration or connectivity between them. An example would be a product portfolio of several apps (one per Value Stream Crew) where customers can use the products separately.

The Loosely Integrated Base is one of the four kinds of Bases in versatile organization design.

In a Loosely Aligned Base, you need some coordination between the Value Stream Crews because the multiple products need to fit in the larger picture and strategy of the Base. In this case, the value streams don't operate with the same cadence (for iterations and increments). And it might be good to have an Experience Crew available to monitor the customer journey and user experience across the various products.

Notes

The four types of Bases are inspired by the distinction as offered in the book Networked, Scaled, and Agile: A Design Strategy for Complex Organizations by Amy Kates, Greg Kesler, and Michele DiMartino.
